i think they drank haterade

When I started telling friends, family and strangers about The Project, I anticipated a few questions. I thought, surely, folks would ask how much I had saved so far or if I had cheated at all.

Guess the NUMBER ONE question I get asked.
Can you buy groceries?

I haven’t figured out a simple way to answer this yet. It always come out something like:
Er…well…umm…I kinda have to eat so, no, I haven’t given up food….yet.

That seems to get the askers a little miffed. Then, of course, they give me permission to keep buying groceries, but I can see a little glint in their eyes that says Cheater!
I always feel apologetic afterwards. I walk around for a few minutes with my head lowered, debating:

Sheesh, Elizabeth, maybe it’s time to give up this “I Need Food” charade.
That only lasts for a few seconds. Let’s Get Real. It’ll be a cold day in hell before someone snatches this bag of kettle korn out of my greasy little hands.

Sheesh Elizabeth, how dare you! What will you cheat on next? Food is simply a gateway drug to a vacation in Paris you know!

Oh, oh wait, I’ve got it! Next time someone asks say, “No (insert super sad eyes) and I’m starving (insert crazy eyes)! Wanna buy me dinner (insert sad eyes again – or crazy, you could go with crazy, scare ‘em a little)?”

Ah, see now, food is a slippery slope! So, imagine you’re at Trader Joe’s, and instead of picking up brown rice and oranges, you load up on chocolates? Or high-end chardonnay? Or one of those New York cheesecakes?!?

    See?!? Danger, Will Robinson!

Wait…I thought your dream was no spending for a year…no, no, that was your GOAL. Ok, I gave a girl a boost. (:

    Voted for you!

The whole food thing is a bit ridiculous. Of course you have to shop for groceries! Have you changed your grocery shopping habits at all since you started?

I guess you could have stocked up in advance – or send your husband shopping. Hahahaha!

Khara- *gulp* how did you KNOW about my trip to paris?? i wish! seriously, i’m going to make crazy eyes next time. dumb question deserves a crazy response.

jennifer- sigh, fine Jennifer, i’ll put the cheesecake back next time but just know that as I’m peeling my orange, I’m going to give you a stink eye.

    gina- thanks! the whole project isn’t a dream…it’s a nightmare. =)

penelope- thank you! i’ve really revamped my shopping habits. I don’t throw anything into my cart that’s junky or “just for fun,” i also don’t eat fast food anymore.

areyoukiddingme- i do have, like, 800 bags of pasta but a girl can not live on carbs alone…sometimes she needs wine in a box too.=)

I find it hard to not over-spend on food. I probably use up 90% of my money after paying bills at the grocery store, farmers’ markets, and restaurants. Wait – can you not go to restaurants? I am very sorry for you… I would miss that way more than new shoes.

I am shocked and appalled that you are spending money on food! I’ve spent all this time reading your blog thinking you were starving yourself for a full year. I feel cheated now.

What do you mean, you need food to survive? No way!

I gave you some clickage too :~)

Going to vote right now, even though you are selfish enough to eat. ;)

mmm kettle corn. For my 30 day bring no stuff into the house I also said we weren’t buying any groceries that weren’t fresh foods, i.e. we have to start eating the boxes of pasta and cake mix that I keep bringing into the house…but I will allow the purchase of eggs. This morning I was scanning through all my supplies…no crackers…how can I get my carb fix?! Plus the very first day someone asked me if I wanted to go to lunch and I said “Well I didn’t say I wouldn’t eat out”. I didn’t end up going, but I, too, am weak. Can people vote more than once from the same computer? I voted in 3 places….muhahahaha!

  • Elizabeth- Flourish in Progress

Mary Sue- we spend so much eating out! It may be because we like restaurants, it may be because I’m such a crappy cook! I can still eat at restaurants as long as I am with family or friends, but not by myself for lunch because in too lazy to make a sandwich

Amanda- yeah, I’m so weak. I hate that about myself. I really need to kick this food habit. No excuses, I’m just selfish.;) thanks for the clickage.

Amy- not gonna try and defend my foolish, selfish behavior. Thanks for the vote!

  • Elizabeth- Flourish in Progress

Rollerscrapper- obviously, you are a genius. Only a genius would think to vote from 3 devices. I have only been able to vote once from each device. Thanks for your support. Hell yeah, going out to eat with friends is okay! But I admire
    you for resisting.:)

I have been trying to not spend money this year, since we are getting ready for a big move in May. IT’S HARD!!! But you do realize how much crap you buy when you aren’t allowed to buy it! I even set up separate checking accounts for bills and spending money. I think its making me a little depressed not being able to go shopping though. LOL

Where the fuck is your integrity, Liz? Jesus.

  • http://ohnoa.com/ ohnoa.com

I kind of feel now that I need to state that I was just joking right above there. There became an awkward silence upon the comments, and I feel like an a-hole.

Jesus is mad, Noa. He wants to know where the fuck YOUR integrity is. I forgive you, though.
