Monday Dare: Erasers for everyone

Every Monday, I’m picking from the List of Things to Try, Places to Go, Possible Acts that Help and Possible Fun to Have. It’s a list I made beforeThe Project started and I’m still adding to it. If you have suggestions, please, feel free to throw them my way. I’m calling the list my Monday Dares, as I get overwhelmed just looking at the words “challenge” or “goal.”

This week: Give thanks.

Being poor builds character. No, scratch that. Being poor sucks.

Shortly after moving to California (I was 21 and Cal was 2), we went to a flea market and spent the whole day strolling around, just to get out of our apartment. Towards the end of our visit, Cal picked out a little trinket and I gladly obliged. It was a plastic container, separated into different compartments, with an eraser in each section.

It became her favorite toy. It was one of her only toys, since we moved with just a few plastic tubs filled with necessities and most of her bulky toys didn’t make the cut. I couldn’t afford to buy her more toys, but she was happy and content with the few things she had.

She spent hours opening and closing the compartments. She took it with her wherever she went and she proudly showed it to anyone that bothered to look and listen.

I think about this sometimes, and rather than making me feel sad, I am grateful.

I’m grateful that Cal is still content and happy. I’m grateful that in spite of my sometimes shitty parenting, she’s fantastic.

I’m grateful that I’ve experienced the full spectrum- I know what it’s like to be poor and I know what it’s like not to be poor. I can tell you that one end can be really unpleasant, but being on the other end doesn’t guarantee happiness. I’ve discovered that I make my own happiness.
______
Cal and I are volunteering next week at a charity that collects toys and supplies for children during the holiday season. For each individual that leaves a comment below by Thanksgiving with what they’re thankful for or what makes them happy, I’m donating $1 towards the purchase of toys to take on the day we volunteer. Sorry friends, no anonymous comments. Erasers for everyone!

The amazingly hilarious and generous Noa Gavin is matching donations up to $100. Check her out y’all. She’s a saint.

My wonderful family has generously offered to match all donations after the $100 mark.

Stefanie Wilder Taylor, the fabulously funny author of Sippy Cups are Not for Chardonnay, Naptime is the New Happy Hour and It’s Not Me, It’s You, is donating a dollar per comment as well! So, she’s beautiful and generous? How is that fair?

What a great way to teach her about the joy that giving during the holidays can bring you. Thanks for sharing your grateful reflections!

I will admit that 2010 has not been the best year for me so I had to think a little harder than usual about that for which I am grateful. The list is still substantial, thankfully.

I am thankful for my amazing, smart, loving, and very healthy son, for family and friends who love me and make sure I know it, for music which really does make me truly happy and for Pepsi which is my life blood and I shudder to imagine a life without, lol! I am also grateful I found your blog, your sharing always brings a smile to my face! Happy Thanksgiving!

Aw. that’s so awesome Mama! I am grateful for beautiful people that think of others first and do things like donate to charities, adopt a child, pass out soup at a soup kitchen, or even just smile at a stranger. Paying it forward, such an amazing concept!

I’m thankful for my friends, they make me happy.

I am thankful for my feet. I think that most people overlook their feet…hell, some people can’t even see them. Nonetheless. I am thankful for two feet that take me from point A to point B with little fanfare.

After not walking for 4 months, the act of standing up and walking across the room to retrieve something is I will never take for granted again.

Having been extremely poor in my childhood, I am grateful for the perspective those experiences have given me. I’m profoundly grateful for my treasure of a husband, who has seen me at my worst and still loves me anyway. I’m grateful for the absence of the pain I experienced for several years. I’m very grateful to be in a position to give to others.

I’m unbelievably grateful to my parents for my education, because I will be graduating in May without a single student loan. Every time I think about it I am taken aback by how crazy, crazy lucky I am. I’m also grateful for my siblings because they are the best friends I could ever ask for, and my fiance because he makes me want to be better.

  • Dasol

I am thankful to my parents for being supportive so supportive, no matter how crazy my projects are sometimes. I am thankful to my mom for always lending me a ear when I need one. I am grateful for the amazing education I’ve been able to receive.

I’m so grateful to be in a place in my life where I can buy toys for kids who need them, I’m proud to say that this summer I want to a target 75% off sale and turned 50 dollars into 200 dollars worth of toys. Sure I had to store them in my office at work until the other week, but when I rolled into the toy drive the lady asked me what organization I was with, I was proud to say,”i bought these on sale, they are all from me” :) that and I’m thankful to have finally found a house! Great of you and cal to volunteer!

  • MsConviviality

I am thankful for my best friend who…(I pause here because I don’t know where to start or whether I’ll be able to stop raving about how GREAT she is) I can not imagine a life without.

I am (also) thankful for my family. After losing my job in July, my family has been patient and generous while I lived at home, doing some soul-searching and an unpaid internship. No matter how annoyed I may get, I am very thankful to have their unwavering support through the tough times as well the good.
And SO thankful to be starting a *paid* position tomorrow – thank goodness!

    I’m Thankful for Adrian.

I’m grateful for the fact that he’s unwavering in his support of each and every one of my ridiculous ideas and whims. I’m grateful that if and when they fail, he’s there with open arms. I’m grateful that he’s grateful, and tolerant of my sometimes shitty behavior. I’m thankful that he once sat in a Chili’s with me on my lunch break and said, “well, why don’t we get married?” I’m thankful that he continues to think this was a good idea, and hopefully will for some time. I’m thankful that when I need him, he’s there, and understanding, and caring, but refuses to put up with my bullshit.

    Also, whiskey.

  • http://ravyndamaurot.livejournal.com/ ravyndamaurot

    This is a great idea!

i am grateful for the people i love, those who stand by me thru difficulty even when it’s just…weird.. because they for some reason think i’m worth it. i’m grateful for my cats, silly as it sounds, and grateful that my chickens have at least enough sense in their fool heads to hide from a hawk and have been lucky, too.

And i am also grateful for whiskey.

    Thank you for doing this!

I have so many things to be grateful for and so many things that make me happy. Of course many of them are the usual my kids, my family, my friends, food to eat, a nice place to live and a great job. But I also try to take pleasure in simple things like grocery shopping because I can afford to buy fresh fruits and veggies, buying gas because I have a car to put it into that is dependable and takes me where I want to go and that I have to mow my lawn because I have place to live.

  • Brandy Kern

So cliched, but I am so thankful for the health of my family…immediate & extended. It’s something that is easily taken for granted, so I try to reflect on how grateful I am for that whenever I can get quiet with myself for a bit.

I have a job that is demanding and challenging and exactly what I wanted. I am thankful for unemployment benefits for my husband that has helped us get by this year. I am thankful for my friends. I am blessed by so very much.

I continue to be very thankful for generous and caring people that share their blessings with others.

My family, as bonkers as they are. My life, as much as I would like to add to it, and subtract a few things :) . My job, as much as I complain about it, it’s a good job with good pay. My health. My general good fortune. And awesome bloggy friends like you with generous hearts. Thank you for doing this, and reminding me to get out and be of service. It’s been too long.
